On Wednesday, July 24th, Lincoln Center, in association with Okayplayer, will kick off the annual Out of Doors season with Soul at the Center, a concert headlined by Grammy Award–winner Lalah Hathaway, who will perform songs from her father, Donny Hathaway. Underneath Hathaway will be The Illustrious Blacks, R&B singer Baby Rose, gospel singer Roosevelt André Credit, and hip-hop forefathers The Last Poets.
It’s going to be a beautiful evening. One that will be celebrating the legacy of Ellis Haizlip and Soul at the Center, the 1972 groundbreaking concert that featured Nina Simone, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Ike & Tina Turner, and Patti Labelle.
Right after the concert, we will be hosting The Afters: Soul at the Center, a party that will feature a night of soul, funk, house, and pop, all courtesy of The Illustrious Blacks, who will be on the ones and twos.
The event will be at the Chelsea Music Hall. Doors open up at 10 PM. And it will be free for people to enter into 11. Then, all you have to pay is $10 at the door. This is a 21 and older event.
