On Monday, Talib Kweli announced a new album, Cultural Currency. This time around, Talib will release the project exclusively on his Patreon channel. Over the next 12 months, fans get access to a new track every month.
Kweli gave a statement about the new partnership.
“I am considered an underground rapper,” he said. “My lyrics critique the status quo. On paper, I was not supposed to be a successful artist. I succeeded in spite of the odds because I was always able to go around the industry and connect with my fans directly.”
The Patreon tiers range in price from $5 per month to $25 per month. Fans who choose the $10 per month option will gain access to Kweli’s Vibrate Higher TV show, as well as monthly unreleased tracks and videos, curated by Kweli, from hip-hop legends. Subscribers also have access to a Patreon-only Discord to connect with Kweli and his crew. Additionally, Talib Kweli is offering exclusive signed vinyls, live Q&A sessions, and more.
“When the music industry told me no,” Kweli continued, “I built an industry around myself. Working with Patreon is the next step in this evolution. Patreon was created by artists for artists. I am proud to be born who I am, but my chosen tribe consists of artists and people who love art. Sharing my art on Patreon allows me to connect with my tribe in amazing and innovative ways.
