It’s been three years since SZA has released her classic debut, CTRL. Fans have been getting impatient. But now we can officially say that SZA is back.
The TDE singer has released her neo-soul-influenced single “Hit Different,” which features Ty Dolla $ign and is produced by the Neptunes. She also released the video for the song, which features the singer at at a junkyard. The video for “Hit Different” was shot by SZA herself and also features really gripping imagery (at one point she’s covered in blood.)
The TDE star sat down with Zane Lowe to talk about the making of the song and what it was like working with the Neptunes.
“I can’t really wrap my head around the experience and I think more so I’m fangirling off of having a track produced by probably the most formative producers and artists for me when I was growing up. I just cannot fucking believe that because it’s my childhood dream and I can’t believe that I made things I that fuck with with someone that really changed my life.”
SZA also added that she recorded five or six songs with the legendary producers.
New SZA music is a celebration. And seemed unlikely even a couple of weeks ago. On August 19th, #FreeSZA started trending after SZA said the relationship with her label was “hostile.”
After #FreeSZA was trending for a couple of hours. SZA had to come back to Twitter and clarify the situation. She tweeted then deleted:
“Don’t nobody need to free me Lmao I’m not held hostage n neither is my music!! me n punch be disagreeing ..hes never steered me wrong and I trust Gods timing.”
