After 5 Long Years, SZA Drops Her New Album ‘S.O.S.’

On Friday, SZA dropped her first album in five years, S.O.S., with appearances from Travis Scott, Don Toliver, Phoebe Bridgers and more.

Singer-songwriter SZA is on a new level. On Friday (December 9), the 33-year-old artist released new album S.O.S., her first LP in five years, following 2017’s Ctrl. Across 23 tracks, S.O.S. features appearances from Don Toliver (“Used”), Phoebe Bridgers (“Ghost in the Machine”), Travis Scott (“Open Arms”), and posthumous “The Stomp” vocals from the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard (“Forgiveness”). Uncredited on “F2F” is Lizzo, while Björk’s “Hidden Place” is also sampled on “Forgiveness.”

While speaking with Nessa on Hot 97 earlier this week, SZA, real name Solana Rowe, discussed that more features were intended to be on S.O.S., however, the artists didn’t meet deadline.

“For a lot of these people, I didn’t turn in my verse – so I can’t be too mad,” Row said. “But also, on the same token, it’s like, ‘Damn this sucks, I really needed you. I wish you showed up for me.’ But I’m sure they felt the same way for me.”

Rowe then spoke about Bridgers’ contribution to “Ghost in the Machine,” noting that the California musician recorded her part in-person.

“I’m grateful Phoebe showed up for me, I didn’t think she would come to the studio in person. She did, which is crazy. We laughed, it’s just hilarious,” Rowe added.

The artist has also teased a deluxe version of S.O.S., as her debut album Ctrl received a fifth anniversary deluxe re-release earlier this year, with seven new tracks.
