Puck is commonly known for being the keyboardist in SZA's touring band. Now, she's releasing her first original song, "Good Friends."

There are a lot of feelings involved with having a crush on a friend. There's the nervousness of wondering if they may feel the same; the excitement of imagining what it would be like to be with them. But there's also that internal conflict — the want for something more that isn't just friends.

Kaley, better known as the artist Puck, captures that in her first original song, "Good Friends."

Made alongside producer Space People, "Good Friends" explores the complexities that come with crushing on a friend, which is embodied in the track's hook: "I've been loving you, like good friends should." Accompanied by upbeat, electronic production, Puck wants listeners to dance just as much they may contemplate on a friend crush of their own.

I like that line because it contains multiple ideas, or perspectives of love at the same time," Puck said in an e-mail. "Writing it helped me get meta and outside my head; I found knowledge about myself and wound up with a dance song too."

"Good Friends" came about while Puck was working on music for other people with Space People.

"I played keys and bass, and he programmed drums and played guitar. It sounded really sick and I started humming melodies and halves of lines. I didn't recognize what the song was about at first, but then it kind of spilled out of me," she said.

Puck is commonly known for being the keyboardist in SZA's touring band. She has also contributed keys and production to projects from Joy Postell, Anna Wise, and Ryahn. Having joined SZA's band when she was 23, Puck said that the Ctrl singer was one of the first major artists that believed in her as a pianist.

"I've watched SZA just go for it all the time for a few years. More than anything else I've learned from being in her band is that I've had to get pretty good at just going for it — executing," Puck said. "Figuring out how to navigate courageously in the face of the unknown has helped me get out of my own way. I used to try to be perfect a lot, but now I find greater pleasure in letting my heart and gut live in the present."
