Rising Nigerian-Canadian singer TOBi just released his second single of 2019, “Sweet Poison.”
The sultry serenade, produced by Nate Smith & Nahum, is the artist’s second single of the year, following the release of his track “City Blues,” inspired by Marvin Gaye‘s “Inner City Blues.” The song is slated to be featured on his forthcoming debut album due later this year.

When he sings, TOBi’s voice quivers with soul, and when he raps, it’s sturdy with conviction. Conceptually “Sweet Poison” was inspired by Sigmund Freud’s repetition compulsion theory, in which a person mentally reenacts an event or its circumstances over and over again, repeating patterns of behavior that were difficult or distressing. With the song, TOBi re-lives a bevy of emotions.
“Sometimes we’re drawn to a particular type of poison, consciously aware that it’s not good for us,” TOBi said in a statement. “In this song, I wanted to be open with my vices to show it’s a prominent part of the human experience.”.
