Steve Lacy is living out his Gemini Rights. On his 10-track new album, the musician explores the depth of love, heartbreak, polyamory and gender fluidity, with appearances from his The Internet bandmate Matt Martians and vocalist Fousheé. Prior to the album’s release, Lacy dropped lead singles “Mercury,” “Bad Habit” and “Sunshine,” where himself and Fousheé are seen being dangled by cable wires on separate cranes.
Gemini Rights comes three years following the release of Lacy’s debut album Apollo XXI, which was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album (now Best Progressive R&B Album) at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. In 2020, the musician released The Lo-Fis, a compilation of old demos, some that were featured on his SoundCloud page. Along with releasing Gemini Rights, this year, Lacy has made contributions to Brent Faiyaz‘s sophomore album WASTELAND (“Gravity”) also being featured on new Ravyn Lenae album Hypnos (“Skin Tight.”)
In an interview with Vulture, Lacy revealed that his production on Mac Miller‘s 2018 song “Jet Fuel” was originally intended for Kendrick Lamar‘s 2017 album DAMN.
“[DJ] Dahi and I, when we were working on DAMN., the first day I came through to work on that record, we just made beats,” Lacy said. He’s so organized. “He has all these different drum loops. He had that loop, and I did that groove, but Dot didn’t use it. Dahi just collects stuff. I guess Malcolm was working on his record and he liked the beat that became “Jet Fuel.”
