Watch SOL Development’s Powerful Ode to Oakland and Black Lives With “Helicopter” Video [Premiere]

Oakland hip-hop group SOL Development released the music video for their latest single “Helicopter,”a stunning visual homage to their hometown, its culture, and its history, anchored by one theme: black lives matter.

The group tackles police brutality, racism, and the black experience in America all through a message and a medium that inspires rather than disheartens.

“We need more art that addresses the black experience with such intention and succinctness,” the group told Okayplayer.

“Helicopter is about historocizing and contextualizing the black experience so that we begin to understand the precarious nature of black life in America or globally for that matter, because systemic oppression knows no geographic boundary. However, central to our survival, is understanding who we are how we got here. We are children of the diaspora. Long suffering is within us. Light is within us.”

SOL Development will be performing on June 24th at Gramercy Theatre in New York City for “Embrace the Rain,” a benefit to raise awareness on the subjects of youth poverty and mental health in the black community.

Keep up with the group on Twitter and Instagram.
