Dream Team Supergroup R+R=Now Release Debut Single “Change Of Tone”
R+R=NOW is a supergroup assembled by Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, who promises enticing tunes—collagically speaking.
Man, listen, you should’ve seen my face when this email hit my inbox. R+R=NOW, the super-duper-group assembled by Robert Glasper, has now released its enticing lead single, “Change Of Tone,” from their forthcoming debut album Collagically Speaking. Available today to stream or download, this song starts off the album and finds R+R=NOW fluidly showcasing their individual sounds as a cohesive blend meant to impact your aural senses.
For those who haven’t been following the trades, R+R=NOW consists of some of the brightest and baddest musicians in the game today. Terrace Martin (synthesizer, vocoder), Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah (trumpet), Derrick Hodge (bass), Taylor McFerrin (synth, beatbox), and newcomer Justin Tyson (drums) play together as if they have been down for years, while expressing hope, love, confidence, and resiliency through their respective melodies. “R+R stands for ‘Reflect’ and ‘Respond’,” says Robert Glasper in a press release. Inspired by Nina Simone while he was co-producing Nina Revisited, her comments on an artist’s “duty” made Glasper stand up and speak out.
Written live in the room and done in a single-take, “Change Of Tone,” plus the entire Collagically Speaking album is a raw blend of future-funk, West Coast jazz, astral electronica, avant-garde, hip-hop-inspired goodness for the soul. Guest voices help to emphasis the “reflect and respond” motif as actors (Terry Crews, Omari Hardwick, Amanda Seales), MCs (Yasiin Bey, Stalley) and singers (Goapele, Amber Navran) bind verse to subjects ranging from love, bigotry, women’s rights, loss, growth, creativity and more.
As someone who’s been living with this album for a few weeks now (yes, the First-Take Listen review is already in queue) — I can say that these experts of execution have defied any expectation you can place on them. They are such professionals with so much poise and talent that you can audibly hear the excitement in the room when someone catches a good groove or manages to blow up the pocket with an impressive riff. It is the sign of a collective that not only knows how to vibe and improv, but listens to each other and can creatively give that energy back in a really dope way. It is a project to have in one’s collection when it finally hits the streets, plus R+R=NOW will be all over the country playing live which is another treat for audiophiles to enjoy this year.
