Quavo performed his emotional solo single “Without You” in tribute to Takeoff during the 2023 Grammy Awards. While seated onstage during the ‘In Memoriam’ segment, Quavo, legal name Quavious Keyate Marshall, was backed by gospel act Maverick City Music, who interpolated lyrics from 2015 Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth collaboration “See You Again.”
Marshall last publicly spoke about Takeoff during the rapper’s memorial at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena in November.
“You were always with me and we did everything together. Since we was kids, you’ve been by my side, looking up at me with them eyes,” Quavo said during the event with 21,000 in attendance. “You never competed with me. We were always on the same team ’cause you hated playing against me ’cause I always played too hard or too rough.”
Less than one month before Takeoff’s death, the rapper co-released album, Only Built for Infinity Links, with Marshall. Released via Quality Control Music, the LP debuted at No. 7 on the US Billboard 200.
Takeoff was killed at Houston’s 810 Billiards & Bowling on November 1. While at the downtown bowling alley, Marshall and Takeoff were at a party with approximately 40 to 50 people when a dice game reportedly got heated, resulting in shots being fired. Takeoff’s alleged murderer, Patrick Clark, was released from a Texas jail in January on a $1 million bond, per Houston Chronicle.
