“The dedication is not only to my mother, but to all those out there who suffer with dementia.”

Earlier this month, Q-Tip revealed that his mother, who celebrated a birthday on Sunday (December 9th) is living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

This week, the A Tribe Called Quest emcee announced he’d be dedicating the next episode of his Beats 1 Abstract Radio  show to his mother and to everyone living with the neurodegenerative disease.

“This weekend on Abstract Radio I’ll be doing a special show dedicated to my mother,” he said in a video posted to his Instagram page. “It’s her birthday on December 9… My mother suffers with dementia and Alzheimer’s, so, I’m gonna be playing a lot of her favorite songs.”

He went on to reveal that he has been his mother’s caretaker, saying, “The dedication is not only to my mother, but to all those out there who suffer with dementia and all of the families who have to deal with it or take care of a loved one who suffers with dementia. I take care of my mother and I wake up with her every day. Taking care of her has been something that’s been eye opening— It’s also been inspirational. So I hope this show will be inspirational for you. Mom, I love you so much. This show is not enough to express that.”

There is no cure for Alzheimer’s, but it is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and 1 in 3 seniors die with the disease or another dementia.

According to Alzheimer’s Association, older Black Americans are about twice as likely to have Alzheimer’s or other dementias as older white Americans, and almost two-thirds of Americans with the illness are women.

Q-Tip’s Abstract Radio show aired on December 7th at 9 p.m. ET. Listen to the full episode on Apple Music.
