The Black Album sometimes referred to as The Funk Bible is the 16th studio album recorded by the late musician. It was released on November 22, 1994 through Warner Brothers. The project was originally slated for release on December 8, 1987, as the follow-up to the March 1987 Sign o' the Times. The 1987 promo release had no printed title, artist name, production credits or photography; just an all- black sleeve accompanied the disc. On promotional copies, only a song listing and catalog number—25677—were printed on the disc. Prince ordered the album to be withdrawn a week before its release date, and the album was replaced with the Lovesexy, released in May of 1988.
