Just months after her catalog resurged on streaming platforms, Aaliyah’s first posthumous single, “Poison” featuring The Weeknd, has arrived. The single, her first in over 15 years, is from her upcoming album Unstoppable which is due in 2022. According to Complex, Unstoppable will boast production from DannyBoyStyles and Nick Lamb, mixing from Mike Dean and Shin Kamiyam on engineering while The Weeknd and the late Static Major will be credited songwriters.
In a recent statement Aaliyah’s uncle, Blackground Records 2.0 founder Barry Hankerson shared his thoughts on “Poison”.
“I’m so excited to share this new song by Aaliyah and the very talented The Weeknd,” Hankerson said. “I wanted her adoring fans to get a special gift before the holidays and felt it was the perfect time to release a never-before-heard offering.”
Following the Blackground Records 2.0 #AaliyahIsComing announcement and website launch in August “Poison” follows Aaliyah’s long-awaited catalog debuting on streaming services in September. Blackground Records 2.0 has also re-released albums by former label artists Timbaland & Magoo, Toni Braxton, Tank, Jojo and Ashley Angel Parker.
Giving reverence to the 20th anniversary of the singer’s death, Blackground Records 2.0 sought to offer Aaliyah’s music to diehard fans and reintroduce her to newer, Gen-Z listeners. With exclusive merchandise, CDs and vinyl dedicated to Aaliyah’s catalog, fans have lauded Aaliyah’s surprise comeback through albums and compilations One in A Million, Aaliyah, I Care for You and Ultimate Aaliyah.
The Weeknd also joins FKA Twigs (who shares the same birthday as Aaliyah) on her new song “Tears in the Club.” The Weeknd is nominated for Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 2022 Grammy Awards for “Hurricane” from DONDA with Kanye West and Lil Baby.
