From Donny Hathaway to Curtis Mayfield: 52 Essential Soul Songs to Listen to Before You Die [Playlist]

To get people ready for our Soul at the Center concert, we have curated an all-encompassing — and frankly perfect — soul playlist, featuring Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, and more.

On July 24th,  Lincoln Center, in association with Okayplayer, will kick off the annual Out of Doors season with Soul at the Center, a concert honoring Ellis Haizlip, America's first black TV host.

For years Haizlip was the host of the all-black variety TV show called SOUL!, which aired on PBS from 1968 to 1973. In 1972, Haizlip, in association with Lincoln Center, held the Soul at the Center, a groundbreaking concert featuring Nina Simone, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Ike & Tina Turner, and Patti Labelle.

Our version of Soul at the Center will be headlined by Grammy Award–winner Lalah Hathaway, who will perform songs from her father, Donny Hathaway. Also on the bill: The Illustrious Blacks, Baby Rose,  Roosevelt André Credit, and The Last Poets. Even better, after the concert we will be holding an after-party where The Illustrious Blacks will be DJing.
