Phife Dawg’s team has dropped the latest single from the deceased rapper’s upcoming posthumous release, Forever. The single is “French Kiss Deux,” and it features J Dilla’s brother Illa J.
The song is smooth, featuring production from duo Potatohead People, who told HipHopDX: “It’s a true honor to be a part of Phife’s legacy. We both grew up as huge [A Tribe Called Quest] fans and it’s surreal to have collaborated with the 5 Footer.”
Illa actually worked with Phife on this song before he passed. In he also spoke to HipHopDX about the song and how it was created. He told the publication:
“It was such an honor to work on this track with Phife… It’s bittersweet. I really wish he was here to celebrate the release of this song. But I know he’s here in spirit, and I’ll never forget him spittin’ his verse over the phone to me. That will always will be a special moment.”
“French Kiss Deux” is the second single to be released from Phife’s upcoming Forever album. The first was “Nutshell Pt. 2,” which features Redman and was produced by J Dilla himself. There was also a great remix of the track, which features Busta Rhymes. Forever has been in the works for years. But it looks like it will finally be released sometime this year (a release date still hasn’t been announced, though.)
