National Geographic has unveiled the first teaser for the upcoming limited series, Genius: Aretha, starting Cynthia Erivo.
The 30-second clip offers a glimpse at Erivo as the late Queen of Soul, charting her life from gospel prodigy to music royalty. Genius: Aretha is slated to premiere over Memorial Day weekend, featuring appearances from Stacey Sargeant as singer Dinah Washington, Courtney B. Vance as gospel giant Pastor C.L. Franklin, David Cross as legendary producer Jerry Wexler (who allegedly coined the term “rhythm and blues,”) and more. Recently, Raphael Saadiq signed on as an executive producer of the show.
Season three follows previous installments of Nat Geo’s hit biographical anthology series, which focused on the lives of Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso, respectively. It joins the forthcoming biopic treatment, Respect, in presenting and preserving Franklin’s legacy for the screen.
