It’s been a banner year for 21-year-old Atlanta MC Mulatto. After signing a deal with RCA Records, the winner of Lifetime’s The Rap Game competition has dropped her debut studio album, Queen of Da Souf.
The album comes on the heels of Mulatto being named a member of the 2020 XXL Freshman class. Earlier this week, she earned her first RIAA gold certification for her single “Bitch From Da Souf.” She celebrated the big year on Twitter. “I Got XXL freshman,” she wrote, “a song [with] my favorite rapper, signed a deal [with] RCA Records, first Billboard chart entry, first plaque..all in 2020.”
Before her appearance on The Rap Game, she started writing at the age of 10, recording in-studio, performing at talent shows and cyphers. In an interview with Paper Magazine, Mulatto spoke about the journey to the spotlight.
“A lot of my career, I was overlooked and underrated because I was “too young,” she said. “I’ve had people tell me, “oh, she doesn’t have a chance of making it until her braces are off.” At first, those comments discouraged me: “Oh, well I’m not going to make it until I’m an adult.” Being a youth and female, it felt like all the odds are against you. Now, I’m very appreciative of it because I’m seasoned, prepared, and ready for whatever because I’ve been doing this for so long.”
Mulatto’s Queen of Da Souf album is available on all major digital streaming platforms.
