Legendary rapper Missy Elliott is getting a street named after her.
On Tuesday night (August 9th), Portsmouth City Council unanimously voted to rename a street “Missy Elliott Boulevard.” The street is currently titled McLean Street, and is adjacent to the Victory Crossing Shopping Center and Tidewater Community College. Of course Portsmouth, Virginia was where Missy was born and raised. (In fact, she was born at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center.)
When WTKR announced the news, Missy took to Twitter to express how grateful she was.
Elliott is one of the greatest rappers of all time. And this is just the latest in a number of accolades the rapper has received over the decades, from Grammys to being elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Last year, she joined the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And back in 2019, she won the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. When she won the award, Missy said during the speech:
“I promised I wouldn’t cry because I cry every award, but this Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award means so much to me. I have worked diligently for over two decades. I never thought that I’d be standing up here… it don’t go unnoticed, the support and love.”
Nicki Minaj is set to receive the award later this year. When that was announced, Missy went to Twitter to congratulate Nicki, who sent her own note, writing:
“…thank you Missy. You kicked down this [door]. Nothing but Love & Respect for your iconic artistry…”
