According to a Reuters report, Jamaican songwriter Michael May filed suit in March 2018, claiming Cyrus' 2013 smash, "We Can't Stop," lifted the line "We run things/ things don't run we" from his song “We Run Things,” released in 1988 as Flourgon. May argued the line resembled his own, "We run things/things no run we," while Cyrus' legal camp contended the lyric wasn't eligible for copyright, as it was essentially a cleaned-up version of the patois phrase, "wi run tings, tings nuh run wi." Nonetheless, May seems to have made enough of a case to secure a bag. However, the terms and amount included in the settlement are still unclear.

"We Can't Stop" was the lead single off Cyrus' Bangerz album. It debuted and peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart, bested by Robin Thicke and Pharrell's "Blurred Lines," which had its own set of very public copyright battles with the Marvin Gaye estate.
