A Michael Jackson Musical Is Coming To Broadway In 2020
The King of Pop Michael Jackson will draw on his catalogue of hits to tell the story of one of music’s greatest creative forces on the Great White Way in New York City.
An announcement from The Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage finds fans, family, and audiophiles who loved the late King of Pop gearing up to see his return to the big time. The as-yet-untitled show will be a new stage musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson and is expected to arrive on Broadway in 2020.
Author Lynn Nottage, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner (Sweat and Ruined) will be penning a book about the Gloved One’s life which will draw on his life and serve as material for the music. The score will also be fueled by a host of pop favorites that includes “Thriller,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” and others that have yet to be shared.
Tony Award winner and contemporary ballet superstar Christopher Wheeldon (An American in Paris) will direct and choreograph the production.
This has to potential to be Fela! and The Color Purple type good. I believe that there should be some involvement from the Alvin Ailey Theater with this, but who knows if they’ll really listen to a brotha from Brooklyn. However this musical comes to be it will be interesting to see if the more controversial parts of the pop star’s life—his 2005 trial, the baby dangling, etc.—will be used or left aside when production starts.
