MF DOOM Gets 30th Anniversary K.M.D. Vinyl and ‘Operation Doomsday’ Rerelease

MF DOOM record label, Metalface Records, are rereleasing KMD’s sophomore album, Black Bastards, and DOOM’s debut to vinyl.

The legacy of MF DOOM is being honored with two vinyl rereleases. DOOM’s label Metalface Records has partnered with Rhymesayers Entertainment to bring Black Bastards by KMD – DOOM’s previous group – and DOOM’s 1999 debut, Operation: Doomsday to vinyl.

Recorded in 1993, KMD’s second album, Black Bastards, was initially shelved the following year prior to its release due to controversy surrounding the album’s cover art, which depicted a blackface cartoon being hung. The group was later dropped from Elektra Records years before the former masked supervillain reemerged as MF DOOM. Fellow KMD member and DOOM’s younger brother, DJ Subroc, died in April 1993 after being struck by a vehicle on the Nassau Expressway in Long Island. Black Bastards was eventually released in May 2000, nearly ten years after the group’s debut album, Mr. Hood.

Additionally, the DOOM estate is releasing exclusive KMD apparel, including beanies, hats, tee-shirts, long sleeve shirts and hooded sweatshirts, to commemorate the Black Bastards anniversary. The Black Bastards album will be available in stores on March 31.

Black Bastards will be reintroduced on red vinyl LP with expanded gatefold packaging and standard black vinyl. DOOM’s Operation: Doomsday, which turns 24 on October 19, remains a cult classic in the rapper’s catalog, with 19 tracks that prominently feature cartoon theme songs, to ‘80s soul staples. Across 19 tracks, Operation: Doomsday included guest appearances from Pebbles The Invisible Girl, DJ Cucumber Slice, Tommy Gunn, MF Grimm and more.
