Backed by strings, R&B legend Mary J. Blige performed her standout song “Good Morning Gorgeous” at the 2023 Grammy Awards earlier this evening. The song is the title track from her latest album, which was released back in February.
It was a powerhouse performance for the singer, who came into the evening with five Grammy nominations: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best R&B Performance, Best Traditional R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song.
Mary isn’t new to the Grammys: she has won nine years throughout her illustrious career. She won her first Grammy, Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, back in 1996 for “I’ll Be There for You/You’re All I Need to Get By.” She last won a Grammy in 2009 for Growing Pains. (That album won the the Best Contemporary R&B Album.)
Mary J. Blige recently talked to People Magazine about the success she’s had with this album, which is her 15th and which was released right before her the amazing Super Bowl performance she did with Dr. Dre. She told the publication:
“I can accept it all with humility and with confidence because I’ve been working so hard all my life — really, really hard. But I wasn’t able to see the good things until I really got my head together and my life together.”
Mary also talked about her origins of blending hip-hop and R&B. She said:
“I honestly can say back then I didn’t know what I was doing. I was just making music. I feel like I’m getting the credit that I deserve now, but for a while, people were just passing by me. I don’t blame anyone. I was passing by myself.”
