Madonna Comes For Tory Lanez For “Illegal Usage” of ’80s Hit

Madonna comes for Tory Lanez for sampling her 1985 hit “Into the Groove.”

Tory Lanez won’t be catching a break any time soon. On his song “Pluto’s Last Comet,” from his new ’80s capsule album Alone At Prom, Tory samples Madonna’s 1985 hit “Into the Groove”, but the pop icon isn’t pleased. Commenting on one of his recent Instagram posts, Madonna accused Lanez of sampling the track without her permission.

“Read your messages for illegal usage of my song get into the groove [sic]!” Madonna wrote.

While it appears that Lanez has yet to respond to Madonna (at least publicly), the comment has gone viral.

First featured in 1985 film Desperately Seeking Susan – which starred Madonna – “Into the Groove” was recently listed on Rolling Stone list “500 Best Songs of All Time” at number 161. The song was written and produced by Madonna and Stephen Bray, later included on the 1985 reissue version of Madonna’s sophomore album Like A Virgin.

Released on December 10th, Alone At Prom was Lanez’s homage to ’80s music. Alone at Prom also marks Lanez’s fourth project release of 2021, following his NFT exclusive album When It’s Dark, Playboy and We Outside. To promote Alone At Prom, Lanez has used an ’80s alter ego persona Ashton Rain, as seen on the visual cover for “Pluto’s Last Comet”.

The singer still faces two felony charges in last year’s Megan Thee Stallion shooting. On December 14th, a Los Angeles Police officer claimed that Lanez said “Dance, bitch!” before shooting the Something for the Hotties rapper in the foot. If convicted, Lanez can be sentenced up to 22 years in prison.
