Madlib Announces Next Project, Previews New Music

Details are few and far between, but something's coming this fall, and it's Lord Quas-approved.

On the heels of one of his most visible years to date, Madlib has announced a new project is arriving this fall.

In an Instagram post published on Quasimoto's page (and shared by the producer's manager, Egon,) earlier this week, a snippet of new music plays to an animation of the producer's menacing cartoon alter-ego blessing the air in a lavishly-furnished grotto-ish space. The percussion-heavy snippet sounds akin to the producer's Yesterday's New Quintet releases with scorching polyrhythms and a roaming Wurlitzer groove. The caption reads, "Checking out the test press of the new thing we’re dropping this fall," which, at the very least provides a loose timeline for whatever's the producer's got up his sleeve.

Earlier this year, Madlib and his brother, Oh No, released their first collaborative album as The Professionals, setting the stage for another big year from the producer. In a late-2019 interview with Giles Peterson, Madlib and Egon confirmed new joint projects were on the way with Westside Gunn, Fly Anakin, and Black Star (womp, womp,) as well as a third and final volume of work with Freddie Gibbs (tentatively titled, Montana.) And in the months since, rumors of a Pusha T link-up began making waves, but it's unclear whether that's in the book or just a pipedream for the Clipse rapper. So, yeah, patience, as always, will be a crucial asset as the waiting game drags on.

But you can hear a snippet of a new Madlib track in the clip below. Hold tight for dates and details on his next project in the weeks and months ahead.
