The release arrives three years after her debut album SweetSexySavage.

Kehlani has finally dropped her newest album It Was Good Until It Wasn’t, the release follows her debut album SweetSexySavage (2017). 

The California-bred singer has had one hell of a ride since she unveiled You Should Be Here (2015), her classic mixtape. Her fans (including me) have grown up alongside the singer as she’s faced media scrutiny, failed relationships and started a journey in motherhood recently. 

On It Was Good Until Wasn’t Kehlani has morphed into an adult. The sound on the project is evolved and it’s quite honestly some of her best work. As the globe faces the COVID-19 pandemic, the singer-songwriter presents her strengths. Her strengths include dropping relatable love ballads and tracks detailing breakups. Throughout the album, her vocals stand out as they normally have on past releases. Features include Jhené Aiko, Tory Lanez, Lucky Daye, Masego and James Blake. 

Our favorite deep cuts include “Bad News,” “Water,” “Change Your Life” featuring Jhené Aiko, and “Serial Lover.” Previously released singles “F&MU” and “Everybody Business” are also standouts on the album. “Bad News” is a slow-paced track that digs into emotions experienced in a relationship that might be on the verge of ending. It's passionately written and also well-produced. Over on “Water,” Kehlani created a sexy cut tapping into her sensual side. This song is really, really good, it should be a single. 

Jhené Aiko adds a hit of her flowy sound on “Change Your Life.” On this track, Kehlani truly shines and the chorus is pretty catchy. It’s an easygoing, airy listen. Both singers provide a look into what it would be like experiencing a relationship with someone they’re really into currently. 

“Serial Lover” is all about being addicted to being in love. If you’re a “recovering undercover over-lover” this track is for you. It’s honest and she shares her thoughts on jumping from one situation to another. Honorable mentions: “Can You Blame Me” featuring Lucky Daye is a stunning partnership from these two. It honestly just works. "Open (Passionate)" is another cut we're really into on the album. Today, she dropped a video shot during quarantine for this track. 

It Was Good Until It Wasn’t holds space for the R&B genre that some listeners may believe is dying. If you’ve had your ear to the ground you’re well aware this is the furthest thing from the truth. 

Kehlani is one of the artists over the years that has been filling that gap. When speaking on this topic with Vulture, she shared, “I just don’t think people know enough about music to make those types of accusations.” She also added, “I’m never gonna be able to make ’90s R&B music. I’m never going to be able to make early 2000s R&B music, because that’s not when I was making music.”
