Kanye West‘s Sunday Service series returned today with a few surprises.
Posted to Kim Kardashian’s Instagram story, clips from today’s performance show Justin Bieber singing Marvin Sapp’s gospel classic, “Never Would Have Made It” with the backing of the band. In another excerpt, the collective flips Roddy Ricch‘s smash, “The Box,” into a G-rated gospel-ish song. And in a final clip, the group takes on Nas’ “Everything” from his Kanye-produced 2018 album, Nasir. According to Billboard, the return to Los Angeles followed recent stops in Chicago for the NBA’s All-Star Weekend, as well as Miami, Detroit, Salt Lake City, and Washington, DC.
Depending on where you fall in the ongoing debate over whether gospel remixes of popular songs are ever more than just okay, today’s performance was a slight break in controversy for West. Last month, the rapper came under fire for an appearance at Awaken 2020 in Arizona, headlining a prayer rally propped up by anti-LGBTQ Christian leaders. The 10-hour event was billed as the “first epic evangelical stadium event of the decade,” featuring Cindy Jacobs, Ché Ahn, and Lou Engle, all of which have crusaded against LGBTQ rights and actively called for Christians to stand against the passing of the Equality Act; a bill passed by Congress in May of last year that would effectively amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include explicit LGBTQ protections. Neither West nor his wife have yet to comment on the decision to perform.
