Just over a month into its historic box office run, Joker hits another major milestone.
According to AV Club, the Todd Phillips-directed supervillain origin story is now the most profitable comic book movie of all-time, thanks to a fairly low-budget production cost ($62.5 million) and its gross sales nearing a billion dollars worldwide.
The record was previously set by Jim Carrey’s The Mask in 1996, which cost $18 million and grossed $351 million at the box office. And before you start screaming about Endgame‘s colossal numbers (breaking damn near every record in the book earlier this year,) keep in mind that while the MCU’s Phase 3 closer secured a $2.5 billion bag in 2019, it cost $356 million to make.
Joker‘s latest trophy follows records for the highest-grossing R-rated film ever and marks the most successful box office performance for a film starring Robert De Niro. Onward and upward, I suppose.
