Jay Rock To Release New Album ‘Redemption’ This Coming June
Jay Rock’s Redemption marks the first TDE solo album release of 2018. No tracklist has been revealed, but you can play “Win” while you wait for more info.
You knew it was coming and yet you were still unprepared. Jay Rock, the beat-bullying, bounty-hunting MC with grit, has just announced his new album Redemption, which will come out everywhere on June 15, 2018, via Top Dawg Entertainment/Interscope Records.
For us here in the office (at least whenever I get to play the music) — “Win,” the first single from the project, gets multiple playthroughs. It’s conquering-hero sound, mixed in with Rock’s infectious flow, makes “Win” a perfect entry into TDE’s growing trophy room. Released last Wednesday, May 16, “Win” has already done just that having hit Spotify’s highly coveted “New Music Friday,” “Get Turnt,” and “Rap Caviar” playlists.
As of press time, “Win” also has close to 2.5 million streams on the Spotify service alone.
The cover is also impressive. While his last effort, 90059, was mute in its imagery (just a handprint with the fingerprints scratched off), Redemption places him at the center of what looks to be his home turf, the Nickerson Gardens in Watts, California. With what possibly might be friends, neighbors, or family in the background, a light shines over Jay Rock indicating that his past transgressions may have been worth it to find the success that currently has bestowed itself upon him.
And it has been a good few years for Jay Rock. He has put the years of guest feature work behind him to return to the spotlight, headlining the extremely dope AF posse cut, “King’s Dead,” which is from the ultra successful Black Panther: The Album. Add to the mix that “Win” is another championship banner track for Jay Rock, plus the tour which is causing headlines on websites around the internet, and this album announcement comes right on time.
Despite no full tracklist for Redemption available yet, we do know that the previously released “King’s Dead,” which features Kendrick Lamar and Future, as well as the newly-released “Win” will be on the effort. So, for the record, that means 2018 has kicked off with Black Panther, Jay Rock is up next for June, and a ScHoolboy Q project is on the way, and it looks like this year will be another entry for the rafters.
