Janet Jackson Was Originally Supposed to Receive Global Impact Award During 2023 Grammys

Janet Jackson was intended to receive the Global Impact Award during the 2023 Grammys, which was awarded to Dr. Dre, Missy Elliott and more.

Janet Jackson was unable to be awarded the prestigious Global Impact Award during the 65th Grammy Awards weekend. One week after the 2023 Grammys, reports have surfaced about Jackson being slated to receive the award during a pre-Grammys event with the Black Music Collective.

While Dr. Dre, Missy Elliott, Lil Wayne and Epic Records CEO, Sylvia Rhone, received the Global Impact Award during the Recording Academy Honors on Thursday, February 2, 56-year-old Jack was also set to be awarded, but it appears that plans fell through. According to TMZ, talks over the award broke down because CBS never apologized for Jackson's treatment following the artist's wardrobe malfunction  during the 2004 Super Bowl. After the incident, which included pop singer Justin Timberlake, issued an apology to CBS, expressing regret due to last-minute rehearsal changes.

The 5-time Grammy-winner was also unable to attend the Recording Academy Honors due to scheduling conflicts. From there, discussions between Jackson's team and CBS shifted to the singer accepting the award during the 2023 Grammys telecast, where both parties discussed the possibility for CBS to apologize or acknowledge Jackson's mistreatment. As talks got "complicated," an amicable decision went unmet.

Accepting the Global Impact Award during the 2023 Grammys was Dr. Dre, who was also honored with the award being renamed after himself. Protesting his recognition was journalist and rapper Dee Barnes, who was allegedly assaulted by Dr. Dre during a 1991 album release party in Hollywood. During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Barnes called the Recording Academy's honor towards Dr. Dre "a choice," although the artist and business mogul has faced domestic violence allegations since the early 1990s.
