Janet Jackson Honors Her Father Joe Jackson During Emotional Performance at Essence Fest

Janet Jackson honored her late father

Janet Jackson spoke for the first time about the death of her father, Joe Jackson. The singer honored her father during her 2018 Essence Festival performance on Sunday night.

During her set, there was a moment where a Joe Jackson montage played in the background. Then she emotionally addressed the crowd, saying:

A little less than two weeks ago, my father passed away...He was comforted by my family and me. Then I talked to my brother and we started to speak about my father's strength. He was very strong. Without his drive, his strength, we wouldn't have the success.

Janet also admitted that she considered canceling her tour dueto the death of her father. But Joe would have wanted her to go on:

My father was a great man...And my brother, he asked me, he said, 'If he were here right now, listening to this conversation, what do you think he would say to you?' And I think my father would've said, 'Janet, please. Finish what you've started.'
