Last month, a new song from the influential production trio soundtracked an animated short for a new collection from the powerhouse luxury brand. It featured contributions from Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, and Terrace Martin. And now, in a sequel to The Adventures of Zoooom and Friends, another new track from the group has surfaced. This time, the transmission features notes from oft-sampled spiritual jazz giant, Gary Bartz. It plays against a kaleidoscopic and, of course, high-fashion, cartoon, following the animated band’s travels to Shanghai, where a new line from Louis Vuitton debuted.
Prior to their animated transformation, SA-RA had sent out a lone dispatch. The group reunited on a bonus track featured on the North American vinyl pressing of producer Shafiq Husayn’s 2019 album, The Loop. It was the first song released from the group in a decade. Their sophomore album, Nuclear Evolution: The Age of Love, was released in 2009, but each member stayed busy throughout the hiatus. Om’mas Keith tapped into the Odd Future fold, contributing production to Frank Ocean’s debut and sophomore albums. Taz Arnold stuck to his fashion chops, but landed production credits on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly and Ty Dolla $ign’s Free TC. And Shafiq filled the space with myriad collaborations, including cuts with Free Nationals, Fatima, H.E.R., Blu, Bilal, and Chris Dave.
And while the group’s long-rumored third studio album, Black Fuzz, is still missing in action, the prospect of a new project appear to be getting better by the day.
Until then, you can hear another new SA-RA song in Louis Vuitton’s latest animated promo above. Hold tight for the crew’s next transmission and keep a tab on their Instagram account for updates in the months ahead.
