Before her performance, she took a moment to talk with Corden about her landmark year in music marked by five GRAMMY nominations, what it was like to be surprised by Janet Jackson at a show, and the meaning of her stage name.

The singer revealed the acronym H.E.R. stands for "Having Everything Revealed."

"It kind of represented this time— becoming a young woman and going through heartbreak and all these things that happened. I call it the evolution of woman," she said adding, "I always said, 'I'll never be that girl that falls for this guy, that goes through this, and I ended up being her. I ended up being that girl. The best way for me to release my music was to be honest, and in order for me to do that, let me not put my face on my music, let me not put my name on my music, and just gift my music the way that it is; it's pure message."

Following the release of her self-titled album H.E.R, the 21-year-old was nominated for five awards at the 2019 Grammys, including album of the year, best new artist and best R&B album.
