The cover is a bonus track included on Beyoncé's Homecoming album.

Accompanying the release of her Netflix Homecoming documentary, Beyoncé also released an album of the same name that included a cover of the 1981 Maze single "Before I Let Go." The cover was well-received on social media when the album came out, fans praising the cover of the song, which was written and sung by Frankie Beverly.

Now, Beverly himself has spoken on the cover and how it came about.

Speaking with Billboard, Beverly called the cover "one of the high points of my life," and recalled how he first learned that the pop artist was covering "Before I Let Go."

"She's a great friend of mine, but I didn't know she was going to do this. I was hearing stuff, but I didn't even want to approach her about it," Beverly said. "She kept it quiet, until her people called me one day maybe a week or two ago. When they played it, that's when I heard the first draft of it, and I was blown away."

Beverly also recalled when he first met Beyoncé as a teen, her mother taking her to a Maze concert at the Houston Rodeo.

"I met her then for the first time but didn't know much about her. She wasn't a big hit star then, but we wound up working together a few times since and she's always been very, very nice to me," he said. "This cover was just like she is. She didn't make a big deal out of doing this song, and that's just the way she works."

In related news, Bey has signed a $60 million deal with Netflix for three specials, one of which was the recently-released Homecoming documentary.
