Flying Lotus also hints at joining his own Brainfeeder label as an artist once his contract with Warp Records is fulfilled.

Late last year came the release of Brainfeeder X, a compilation album celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Brainfeeder, the independent record label founded by producer Flying Lotus.

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, FlyLo spoke on Brainfeeder’s impact and the artists that have come to define the label, even crediting it with “the resuscitation of jazz.”

“The truth is, when it comes to this hip-hop stuff…it’s either trap [music] or us right now, you know? And when it comes to jazz, it’s either smooth jazz or us. It’s one or the other,” the producer said.

In making his case, he referenced Kamasi Washington‘s 2015 album The Epic, the critically-acclaimed project created by the Los Angeles-based saxophonist that was released on Brainfeeder.

Elsewhere in the interview, FlyLo speaks on why producer Gaslamp Killer was absent from the Brainfeeder X compilation. He doesn’t directly mention the rape allegation that was made against Gaslamp in 2017, only offering the following on why he didn’t appear on the release.

“We tried to invite everybody who made sense,” the You’re Dead! artist said. “Some people, it didn’t work out.”

Flying lotus also hinted at joining his own label as an artist. He’s currently with Warp Records (the label has released all of his major physical albums) but he will fulfill his contract obligations with the label following the release of his forthcoming new album.

“I’m not yet,” FlyLo said when asked why he’s not on his own Brainfeeder label, before adding “I shouldn’t have said that.”

The rest of the interview can be read here.
