Drake just made Billboard history at least twice over.
Not only did the rapper’s new album debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, but over on the Hot 100, nine of the top 10 slots are occupied by songs from Certified Lover Boy (a first.) And of the top five, the Toronto rap star is in every single position, a feat only accomplished once prior by The Beatles for a single week in 1964. Sitting at the top of his Top 10 monopoly is the album’s lead single “Way 2 Sexy,” featuring Future and Young Thug. The song’s No. 1 debut marks the third time an interpolation of Right Said Fred’s 1992 single, “I’m Too Sexy,” has topped the chart.
Drake’s chart performance also snatches titles previously held by Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and the rapper himself. Prior to this week, only Thriller, Rhythm Nation 1814, and Drake’s own, Scorpion, had placed seven songs in the Top 1o of the Hot 100. The success of Certified Lover Boy also brings the rapper’s total Top 10 appearances to a whopping 54, putting miles between him and Madonna’s 38 or the Fab Four’s 34.
It should be noted that these numbers reflect only the first full week of sales for Certified Lover Boy, which was released on September 3rd amidst a heated feud with Kanye West, who dropped his own album, DONDA, just a few days prior. Both albums clocked in at well north of the 20-song mark and featured overlapping features from Lil Baby and, more controversially, JAY-Z, whose refusal to play sides quickly became a thriving meme. According to Pitchfork, Certified Lover Boy had the biggest week of sales of the year, nearly doubling the those of DONDA in four fewer days of streaming (ouch.) And the gap appears destined to widen in the weeks ahead.
