While speaking with HipHopDX, Premier revealed that the trio will be performing together as Black Star Gang. The name is a reference to a line Kweli raps on the song “Business or Art” from the new Gang Starr album, One of the Best Yet.
According to Premier, the rare show came about even before Kweli was made aware of the album, with the rapper wanting the producer to perform alongside him and Bey.
“… the crazy part is they wanted to call us Black Gang Starr and I’m like, ‘Nah because without Guru here, I don’t feel like that’s right…,” Premier said.
When Kweli checked in to see if Premier was available for the gig, that’s when the producer told the rapper that he was working on the new album.
“…he’s like, ‘Oh man, let me get on that if you have a spot,'” Premier said. “I’m like, ‘Man, the only spot I have is really slow. I know you do more of mid-tempo songs.’ He said, ‘Man, I don’t care what tempo it is, if Guru is on there, I want to ride next to Guru.'”
The show is taking place in Denver, CO, on November 23, at Cervantes’ Masterpiece. Prior to this, Q-Tip and Busta Rhymes will also be having a rare show in Denver at Mission Ballroom on November 15.
