D’Angelo Will Be Featured on Audible’s ‘Words + Music’ Series

D’Angelo and Jazmine Sullivan have joined Audible’s Words + Music roster, each artist hosting a musical narrative entries.

D’Angelo will highlight his neo-soul contemporaries in a new series courtesy of podcast company Audible. The 4-time Grammy winner will host a currently-untitled entry of the Words + Music series, with a separate entry titled The Art of Confessing from R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan.

Diving into his own musical journey, with nods to contributions from Erykah Badu, India. Arie, Lauryn Hill, Bilal, and Jill Scott, D’Angelo will highlighjt “the music of the 1990s and 2000s [as] part of an eternal golden braid of soul, one that existed before, one that exists now, something that defies branding or rebranding—always a product of the past, always rooted in the present, always projecting into the future.”

For the episode, the Richmond, Virginia native will use five instruments – organ, piano, Fender Rhodes, electric guitar, and drum machine – to “tell a different story, make a distinct point, and conjure new spirits,” according to the official descriptor.

It added, “Sometimes those stories will be personal, sometimes metaphysical, sometimes musical. Sometimes it’s about [his] music, and sometimes it’s about the art form itself, building to a musical crescendo and an unprecedented understanding of both the music and the man.”

Co-created with journalist and author Clover Hope, Sullivan’s The Art of Confessing will premiere on Friday, February 3, centering the singer-songwriter’s roots and connectedness to the varied perspectives of Black women. The entry will also feature Sullivan’s live performance set recorded at the World Café in Philadelphia, where she recorded “Lions, Tigers & Bears,” “Let It Burn,” “Girl Like Me,” “Masterpiece (Mona Lisa),” and the Grammy-winning song “Pick up Your Feelings.”
