Childish Gambino Releases “This is America,” His First New Work Since “Awaken, My Love!”
Directed by Hiro Murai, “This is America” finds Childish Gambino manically dancing while chaotic scenes unfold behind and because of him.
Right now, as this is being written, Donald Glover just trotted out his Young Lando character for a hilarious sketch about the lack of black people in space for Saturday Night Live. With responses and critiques all hailing the award-winning creative’s appearance as a success, Glover’s alter-ego, Childish Gambino, debuted two new songs during the show’s musical performance with the first one, “This is America,” also receiving the visual treatment.
Directed by collaborator and friend, Hiro Murai, “This is America” is blatant with its overt political themes and visuals. Glover as Gambino stars in the video as a man who manically dances to the tune while scenes of chaos and terror unfold behind and because of him. It is a dynamic video, which is sure to cause quite a conversation online once the sun rises. “This is America” is the first new material from Glover since his Grammy-nominated full-length “Awaken, My Love!” was released at the end of 2016.
Now that new music is out, expectations for Glover’s new Pharos show, which is planned for New Zealand this November, has probably grown significantly. He is also set to head out on tour this fall with guests Rae Sremmurd and Vince Staples. In addition to that, Glover has said that the next Childish Gambino album will be his last, saying, “I think endings are good because they force things to get better.”
