Childish Gambino Is The First Rapper To Ever Win Song Of The Year At 2019 Grammys

His song "This Is America" received the award.

Childish Gambino's "This Is America" has won the award for Song of the Year at this year's Grammys.

"This Is America" beat out "All the Stars" by Kendrick Lamar and SZA, "Boo’d Up" by Ella Mai, "God’s Plan" by Drake, "In My Blood" by Shawn Mendes, "The Joke" by Brandi Carlile, "The Middle" by Zedd & Grey feat. Maren Morris and "Shallow" by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

"This Is America" is the first rap song to ever receive the award. This is the ninth time the award has been given to a black songwriter (out of the 61 times it's been awarded).

Gambino was nominated for a total of five GRAMMYs, having already won Best Rap/Sung Performance and Best Music Video for "This Is America." He is also nominated for Best R&B Song for "Feels Like Summer" and Record of the Year for "This Is America."
