“Kids see ghosts sometimes, kids see ghosts sometimes.”
There was reason for doubt…for obvious reasons. Feelings of unease went to rest on Saturday evening after Kanye tweeted a picture of the epic stage setup.
Kids See Ghosts is the collaborative album between Kanye West and Kid Cudi. It’s also the fan-favorite out of the five G.O.O.D. Music albums Ye executive produced earlier this year. Tyler, the Creator’s stacked festival, which took place at Dodgers Stadium, would be the first time the two performed as Kids See Ghosts. (Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival 2018 might have had the lineup of the year: Lauryn Hill, BROCKHAMPTON, Post Malone, Jorja Smith, Jaden Smith, Pusha-T, and more performed at the two-day festival.)
At around 10:10 PM EST the curtains slowly dropped. The stage revealed both Kanye and Cudi standing inside a hanging see-through box. (Pop singer Lorde would insinuate they stole the idea from her on Instagram.) Music started playing; they began their set performing the explosive “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1.”
The moment felt surreal. The crowd pushed and mobbed to get even the slightest bit closer to the front. With the entire album being only 23 minutes long, concert-goers were blessed with a live performance of the entire Kids See Ghosts album. At one point, Tyler, The Creator was seen front and center, belching the words “I feel freeeee” as Ye and Cudi gracefully performed :Freeee (Ghost Town, Pt. 2)” overhead. (Cudi took the time out to tell Tyler he loved him during the set.)
Kanye and Cudi have a long history together. Fans in attendance were mindful of this. Some of the loudest applause came when the duo performed a number of throwback hits that we all know and love, including 808s & Heartbreak classics like “Welcome to Heartbreak” and “Paranoid.”At one point Cudi performed his upbeat masterpiece “Pursuit of Happiness.” (It was the only solo Cudi we heard all night.)
The set ended with the album standout “Ghost Town” from Kanye West’s divisive ye album. The night ended with a majority of the crowd singing “I feel kinda free.”
