Bruno Mars, Bryson Tiller, SZA & Cardi B Win Big At BET’s Soul Train Awards
Last night, Nov. 26, the best in soul, R&B and hip-hop were awarded for their unrivaled musical talent and show-stopping performances.
Hosted by the one, the only Erykah Badu, last night’s Soul Train Awards celebrated the best and brightest in soul, R&B and hip-hop. Featuring the likes of SWV, Daniel Caesar and Kirk Franklin — the show was a creative juggernaut, showcasing unrivaled musical moments and tributes, plus show-show-stopping performances.
Bruno Mars led the night’s winners, dominating in top categories such as “Best R&B/Soul Male Artist,” “Video of the Year,” “Album/Mixtape of the Year,” “Song of the Year,” and “Best Dance Performance”. SZA followed with two awards of her own—“Best New Artist” and “Best R&B/Soul Female Artist”. Additional winners included Cardi B (“Rhythm & Bars Award”), Bell Biv Devoe and Ledisi (“Soul Train Certified Award”), Solange (“The Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award”) and DJ Khaled ft. Rihanna and Bryson Tiller (“Best Collaboration”).
A rollercoaster ride of thrills and laughs from start to finish, SWV took home the third annual “Lady of Soul” honor, kicking off the program with a medley of their top hits. Method Man and U-God of Wu-Tang Clan came out to join the soulful trio for their final song, “Anything,” getting the crowd out of their seats. Badu, hosting the Soul Train Awards for a third consecutive time, opened with an impactful statement about our current state of affairs in the country before taking a knee in front of the crowd.
Later on in the show, Toni Braxton was given her flowers as part of the “LEGENDS Award”. After a performance medley, she would take to the stage to remind everyone just how legendary she still is before hitting the stage to sing her classic hits including, “Love Shoulda Brought You Home,” “You’re Making Me High,” and “He Wasn’t Man Enough for Me”. As the show came to a conclusion, Kirk Franklin led an inspirational performance alongside MAJOR., Le’Andria Johnson, Daniel Caesar and Ledisi.
