The Round-Up: Best Songs of The Week – ft. Phony Ppl, Little Dragon, Tyler, The Creator and More [Playlist]

A fresh bag of dusty soul flips, lux G-Funk anthems, glistening dance floor fodder, and so much more.

After weeks of gestation, the 2020 release calendar is finally filling out. And if today’s drops are any indication, the year’s already brimming with prospective heat.

On the new album front, Sporting Life brings heady beat experimentation to the fore of NYC’s full-bloom renaissance on his new project, Hbcu Gameday. NOLA’s own, Lil Wayne, returns with a lengthy runtime and a top-shelf guest list on his 13th studio project, Funeral. Honorary 504 Boy, Curren$y, extends the heat streak with a bid for a late-night slot on his latest tape, The Tonite Show. Cardo’s flaunts an uncanny command of lux, G-Funk-adjacent suites on his new mixtape, Game Related. And Tha God Fahim clocks in with his second project of the year, Lost Kingz, featuring Mach-Hommy and Vinnie Paz.

This week’s haul is, however, is anchored by loosies, one-offs, and early shadow’s forthcoming albums. Tyler, The Creator leads the pack with a pair of soulful blips on the heels of a big ambivalent win at this year’s Grammys. After debuting their Megan Thee Stallion collaboration on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, Phony Ppl relinquished the studio version of the boogie-blessed cut. Little Dragon announced their next outing with a bit of glistening dance floor fodder. Reason’s new send-up features a few adlibs from TDE labelmate, Kendrick Lamar. And OKP alum, Sama’an Ashrawi, dug deep into his family’s archive to unearth an unheralded segment of Palestinian music history, a psyched-out storm from the country’s first rock band, Al-Bara’em, which was founded by his father, uncles, and aunts approximately 50-years-ago. But that’s just half the script.
