US State Department Is Monitoring A$AP Rocky’s Case, Calls For Sweden To Treat Him “Fairly And With Respect”

The rapper and model was arrested in Sweden on July 2.

The U.S. State Department is monitoring the situation surrounding A$AP Rocky‘s arrest and detainment in Sweden.

A State Department spokesperson shared with Politico that the department is aware of Rocky’s case and that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been briefed. Robert O’Brien, a top official at the department and the special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, is also closely monitoring the situation.

“There are certainly some facts about the arrest and detention that raise concerns,” the spokesperson said. “We expect all governments, including Sweden, to treat American citizens fairly and with respect. … We hope to see ASAP Rocky and his colleagues back on tour and reunited with friends and family soon.”

As Politico also notes, Swedish prosecutors have until Friday to decide if they’re going to charge Rocky or ask a court to let them hold him longer.

Rocky was arrested on July 2 after a video surfaced of him and his entourage in a street fight with two people. Rocky claimed that the two men kept following them in Stockholm, which resulted in the altercation.

Since then, it has been reported that Rocky is being held in “inhumane conditions” while imprisoned at Kronoberg prison. However, his lawyer has refuted such reports, saying that the rapper was “treated properly” by Swedish jail authorities.
