Yes, your ears aren’t deceiving you — that is Anderson .Paak covering Erykah Badu‘s “Window Seat” while also covering Lil Nas X‘s “Old Town Road.”

During his appearance on BBC Live Lounge, .Paak took the opportunity to give Lil Nas X’s hit song a jazz and soulful spin by interpolating the New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) lead single. That .Paak is referencing the Badu track is apparent from the very beginning, starting off the performance the same way the song begins on her album, while also referencing its main melody.
Earlier this year, .Paak released his fourth studio album Ventura. The artist previously spoke with Okayplayer about how the album shortly came after the release of Oxnard, which he released last year.
“We finished them at the same time. We wanted them to be given out at the same time. But there was just timing issues. So I was like ‘cool, let’s get Oxnard out and then we’ll get Ventura out shortly after,” he explained.
“There is a lot more soul. A lot of beauty…a lot of funky cool shit, man,” .Paak said about the difference between Ventura and Oxnard. “[Dr.] Dre has a lot of trust in me. And allows me leeway with the writing and the production…I went through the boot camp — which I felt like Oxnard and Compton were like my boot camp.”
