An Upcoming Amy Winehouse Biopic will Chronicle The Last Years of Her Life

The film is being adapted from a 2010 book about the late Amy Winehouse.

The embattled final years of Amy Winehouse are getting the big-screen treatment.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Halcyon Studios is developing a biopic based on Saving Amy, a book by Daphne Barak about the iconic British artist. Released in 2010, Saving Amy chronicled Winehouse's last three years through more than 40 hours of footage, unseen photos, and notes, all of which were gathered with approval from the singer and her family. Plot points are still being kept close to the chest, but Winehouse's final years were lived in constant tension with the media (specifically the UK's predatory paparazzi racket,) and with much focus on her substance abuse issues.

"Our team is honored to be working on this project. Although her career was cut far too short, Amy was the voice of a generation and we look forward to telling her story in the most poignant way possible," said Halcyon Studio chief, David Ellender, in a statement. Barak will serve as executive producer on the still-untitled project, which follows several films about Winehouse's life, including the heartwrenching 2015 documentary, Amy, from director AsifKapadia and A24 Films. Upon release, Amy was condemned by Winehouse's father. "I felt sick when I watched it for the first time. Amy would be furious. This is not what she would have wanted," said Mitch Winehouse of Kapadia's documentary. Where Amy was told through the lens of Winehouse's friends and collaborators, another documentary, 10 Years On, was released earlier this year by the BBC, examining the artist's life and career from the perspective of her mother, Janis.

Winehouse's estate has yet to offer comment on their involvement with the upcoming biopic. Hold tight for updates on the project in the weeks and months ahead.
