There aren’t a lot of festivals like Afropunk. For the 19th straight year, Afropunk held their annual festival in Brooklyn. A lot has been written about how gorgeous Afropunk is (you won’t find a more beautiful-looking crowd at any festival in the country.)
But Afropunk is about the performances. And this year’s festival was massive, featuring sets from Jill Scott, FKA twigs, J.I.D, Gary Clarke Jr., Rico Nasty, Danny Brown, Death Grips, and more. Afropunk had a bumpy year in 2018, with criticism about how the festival has scaled. Those critiques weren’t as prevalent this year.
We sent our photographer Vickey Ford out to Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn to document the best of Afropunk 2019. Check out the photos below.
