The hottest acts in music connected at the 2022 American Music Awards on Sunday night (November 20). Held at the Microsoft Center in Los Angeles, recent Rock Hall inductee Lionel Richie was honored with the AMA Icon Award, while performance highlights included Lil Baby, Yola, and Missy Elliott who joined Brazilian vocalist Anitta for “Lobby.”
One of the biggest moments of the night belonged to GloRilla and Cardi B, who shut down the AMAs with their hit collaboration “Tomorrow 2.” The performance comes just days after Big Glo released her debut EP Anyways, Life’s Great… ,and announced her tour which begins in January. On Friday (November 18), Cardi surprised Lizzo’s Special Tour stop in Inglewood to rap “Rumors” alongside the headliner.
Lil Baby extended the rollout of his new album It’s Only Me with “In A Minute” and “California Breeze,” with smoke unfurling around him.
After performing “Bones,” rock band Imagine Dragons reunited with JID for their “Enemy” collaboration, where the Atlanta rapper moshed with lead singer Dan Reynolds and the band’s dancers.
British singer-songwriter Yola stunned during her Song of Soul segment with a powerhouse showing of “Break the Bough” from her sophomore album Stand for Myself, which released last July.
Toward the ceremony’s end, soul icon Stevie Wonder performed dueling pianos with pop singer Charlie Puth, also joining Ari Lennox, Muni Long, Jimmie Allen, Yola, Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie and more for a rendition of 1985 hit “We Are the World.”
The AMAs were also supposed to have a Michael Jackson tribute performance handled by Chris Brown, but it was canceled at the last minute according to Deadline. Brown shared a rehearsal video for the performance with the caption “U SERIOUS?” and wrote the following comment on the post as well: “WOULDVE been the ama performance but they cancelled me for reasons unknown.”
