XXL decides who got next

XXL Magazine has released the official 2018 Freshman cover. The cover features nine rappers picked by the XXL staff, and one rapper voted in by the publication’s readers.

Here are the rappers on the list: Lil Pump, J.I.D., Ski Mask The Slump God,  Smokepurpp, BlocBoy JB, Stefflon Don, YBN Nahmir, Trippie Redd, and Wifisfuneral. The 10th spot was Lil Skies, but, according to XXL, the Waynesboro, Pennsylvania rapper refused to attend the shoot for the cover.

What’s interesting about the cover is how dominant the Florida rap scene has become; four of the rappers on the list come from the Sunshine State (Pump, Ski Mask, Wifi, and Smokepurpp.) The other interesting thing: a majority of these rappers would be classified as SoundCloud rappers. (Majority of rappers on the cover also have the Soundcloud rapper look: dreads and face tattoos.)

As far as female rappers, there’s only one: London’s Stefflon Don. So clearly, XXL needs to get better in that aspect. Check out the cover above.
