Five years ago, a Twitter thread from A’Ziah King about dancing, partying, and violence took social media by storm. On Thursday, fans got a first look at the on-screen adaption. A24 Films released the official teaser trailer for Zola on Twitter.
“On October 27, 2015 @_zolarmoon tweeted the following…”Y’all wanna hear a story about why me & this bitch here fell out? It’s kind of long but full of suspense.”
Taylour Paige, who previously appeared in VH1’s Hit the Floor as Ahsha Hayes, stars as Zola. Riley Keough plays Zola’s new friend, Stefani. Keough appeared in the Starz series The Girlfriend Experience, where she earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Limited TV Series or TV Movie. Nicholas Braun, known as Cousin Greg of the Emmy-winning HBO drama Succession, joins the cast as well.
Writer/director Janicza Bravo premiered the film at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews. To quench your thirst until the film arrives, watch a 14-minute roundtable discussion with Bravo, Jeremy O. Harris, A’Ziah King, Paige, Keough and Braun on Collider. The group discusses the process of being approached for a film adaptation of the story, how Paige landed the role, and more.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film doesn’t have an official release date as of yet. The trailer even pokes fun at the to-be-announced release date. “Coming this…” the ticker reads before backspacing. “Coming next,” backspacing again before settling on “Coming Soon.”
