Yasiin Bey Asks Black Star Fans To “Value” Their Creative Process

While visiting People’s Party with Talib Kweli, Yasiin Bey called out Black Star fans for not understanding their partnership with Luminary.

Black Star member Yasiin Bey is confronting fans for undervaluing the duo’s partnership with Luminary. In May, Black Star released their long-awaited sophomore album No Fear of Time exclusively on the podcast network, which also houses their Midnight Miracle podcast with Dave Chappelle. As Black Star members Bey and Talib Kweli released the album on Luminary to ensure rightful earnings, some fans opted not to subscribe to the platform.

During the season two finale of podcast People’s Party with Talib Kweli, the rapper asked Bey how he feels about detractors who complain about No Fear of Time only being available on Luminary.

“People say one thing, but their response and their attitude really reveal what they value. Then you know who is really riding with you. Everybody has to take the action that is best suited for them.”

In 1998, the duo released their debut album Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, but the release was pre-streaming and available for purchase on CD, vinyl and cassette format.

Bey pointed to Kweli during the episode and added, “That’s what I really respect about what we’ve done — not only creatively but in terms of how the work is getting delivered. You’re gonna get it in a way that we don’t get destroyed and completely compromised. We want it to get out there to as many people as possible, but not at any cost!
